More one in five British workers lie to others about their job, with the deceit more prevalent in young people, a survey has found.

Solopress questioned 2,000 employees and found that 25% of men lie about their profession to others, compared to less than 20% of women.

Young people were more likely to lie about what they did for a living, with 28% of those aged 18 to 34 admitting to distorting the truth about their employment, double the number of those aged 45 to 54. Over the age of 55 just nine percent of respondents admitted to telling untruths.

When questioned about their dream job, pilot was the most popular option, followed by professional footballer and journalist or editor. A small number of people aimed for the stars and chose astronaut as their dream profession, while others chose options a little closer to home like bed tester or beer taster.

Doctors and surgeons were considered to be the most well respected careers, followed by joining the armed forces, both of which were in stark contrast to traffic wardens, with almost half those surveyed describing it as the most detested career choice.
