KFC has offered the family of a toddler recovering from from a pit bull attack $30,000 (£17,500) after she was asked to leave one of their restaurants for “scaring” the other diners with her facial injuries.

The family of three-year-old Victoria Wilcher took to Facebook to complain about the discriminatory treatment of their young daughter at a KFC restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi, and the news soon spread across social media and online communities such as Reddit.

KFC said they are still investigating the incident, but have offered to pay £30,000 towards Wilcher’s medical bills and a representative has apologised to the family. On Facebook, they said:

“As soon as we learned of the report on Friday, we immediately began an investigation. This kind of hurtful and disrespectful action would not be tolerated by KFC. Regardless of the outcome of our investigation, we have apologized to Victoria’s family and are committed to assisting them. We are making a $30,000 donation to help with her medical bills. The entire KFC family is behind Victoria and her recovery.”

The toddler had been attacked by three of her grandfather’s pit bulls in April and is recovering from a number of injuries, as explained on her Facebook page:

“She had a broken upper and lower jaw, broken nose, cheek bones and right eye socket. She lost her right eye completely and the ability to move the right side of her face.”
