A baby bull elephant separated from its heard has fought off an attack by 14 lions at South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

The one-year-old elephant, nicknamed Hercules by staff at the park, manages to fend off 14 lionesses as they jump on his back and attempt to bite through his skin, with the scene captured by tourists on a safari by Norman Carr Safaris.

He manages to keep the lions at bay by kicking them away, heading into the water, and eventually charging at them.

The tour guide, Innocent, who saw the events commented:

“In the many years I have been a safari guide in Zambia at the South Luangwa, never have I seen anything like this.

“We were all so worried the elephant would be killed right before us. What a fighter. It fought off all 14 lions. Incredible.”
