The lawyer for kidnapper Ariel Castro has said that he “allowed” the three women, who he had held prisoner for more than a decade, to escape because he knew the end was near.

Speaking on the anniversary of the escape of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus from Castro’s ‘house of horrors’, his lawyer Craig Weintraub told WKYC-TV that Castro saw that the son he fathered with one of his captives was getting older and needed to go to school.

He said:

“[Castro] didn’t have the courage to go to the police department and surrender, and the only way this was going to happen is if he was negligent and allowed them to leave the house and be able to find a way out while he was gone a few hours”

Castro was arrested soon after the women escaped in August 2013, and pleaded guilty to a long list of charges including charges of kidnap and sexual. He committed suicide in prison soon after his conviction.
