The government has announced plans to scrap car tax discs next year as part of the Autumn Statement.
Tax discs have been in use since 1921, but as the DVLA and police already rely on an electronic register, there will no longer be a reason for a physical disc.
Under the new scheme, motorists will be able to pay for their car tax by monthly direct debit rather than the current six or 12 months instalments.
A spokesperson for the Treasury described the switch to this digital system as the government moving “into the digital age”.
The changes are expected to come into effect form October 2014.
