Marvel Comics have announced that they will introduce a new female Muslim superhero next year.
The comic book giant has said that they will launch a new series called Ms Marvel starring Kamala Khan, a teenage Muslim girl from New Jersey who discovers that she has shape-shifting powers.
This is a big change for Ms Marvel, with the previous incarnation of the character being a blonde hair, blue eyed, all American fighter pilot.
In an interview with the New York Times, series writer G. Willow Wilson said that Khan was strong and beautiful, and without any baggage of being “different” or an outsider with Pakistani heritage. Her stories will show how her familial and religious influences interplay with her super-heroics.
