Italian engineers were successful in setting the wreckage of the Costa Concordia upright in a 19-hour operation.

The operation began at 07:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Monday and the ship was finally set upright at 04:00 local time (03:00 GMT) on Tuesday morning.

No environmental spill has been detected so far, which remains a major concern with the wreckage off the coast of the Italian island of Giglio, with the operation being heralded a success.

The ship now sits upright upon a steel and concrete frame, where it will stay until the next stage of the operation in spring or summer 2014.
