A volcano has erupted on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing at least 11 people.

Mount Sinabung began to rumble four months ago after being dormant for three years, and had seen a number of low level eruptions where clouds of hot ash and dust were spewed into the air.

Thousands of people living nearby had been evacuated from their homes, but, believing the threat of a major eruption had subsided, the Indonesian disaster management agency allowed those living at least 5km from the volcano to return home.

However, Mount Sinabung erupted on Saturday, spewing hot rocks up to 2km into the air.

A group of schoolchildren on a sightseeing trip are believed to be amongst the dead.
