Pop sweetheart Taylor Swift has bought the adult domains of her name to prevent them from falling into the ‘wrong hands’.

The platinum selling artist purchased both TaylorSwift.porn and TaylorSwift.adult to make sure that they are not bought by spammers or someone looking to damage her reputation by publishing fake nude images with her face photoshopped onto an adult performer’s body.

The latest batch of domains to be made available to the public in June include .adult, .porn, and .sucks, and Swift will likely not be the only celebrity looking to protect their brand from association with the adult entertainment industry.

Previously, companies and high profile individuals only needed to buy a handful of domains to protect their brands, with few domains available beyond .com. .net, .org, and country specific top-level domains (TLDs) such as co.uk.

However, since 2011 the not-for-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which controls the generic top level domains (gTLDs) has been rapidly expanding the number of domains available to include, which now number 547.

Some have described the move by ICANN as a money grab, because it forces a large number of brands to purchase their name and/or trademarks hundreds of times, costing them thousands of pounds each year. Yet, ICANN maintains that they are merely expanding the number of opportunities for individuals and companies to find a great name, with .com domains very rarely still available.
