Two British tourists have been murdered in an attack on a beach in southern Thailand, police have said.

The bodies of the two victims were found early on Monday morning near to the bungalows on the beach where the pair had been staying on the popular tourist island of Koh Tao.

Both bodies showed signs of serious injuries, believed to have been inflicted with a garden hoe that was found nearby. The woman’s throat was reportedly cut, while the man suffered a blow to the back of the head.

The victims have not been publicly named, but were described by police as a 24-year-old man from Jersey and a 23-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

The British consul in Bangkok is travelling to Koh Tao to investigate the incident, the Foreign Office has said.

Thai police have said that they are yet to identify a motive or a suspect for the attack, but they have been reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops and restaurants and suspended boat travel to and from the island for a number of hours.
