About 330 jihadists from the Islamic State are believed to have been killed in RAF air strikes in Iraq, the defence secretary has said.
Michael Fallon told parliament that the numbers were “highly approximate” because the UK does not have troops on the ground to investigate the impact of the strikes.
He also denied that the RAF strikes had resulted in civilian casualties, but did not comment on the civilian casualties resulting from coalition strikes against IS in general.
Fallon’s comments were in response to a question by Green MP Caroline Lucas, who asked for an estimate of the civilian casualties from strikes by all partners of the global coalition against IS.
The RAF began its air campaign against Islamic State targets in Iraq and year ago with the support of the Iraqi government. British forces do not currently take part in coalition air strikes on IS targets within Syria after parliament voted against intervening in the Syrian civil war two years ago.
