The controversial Facebook group “Women who eat on tubes” Facebook group is now back online after Facebook admitted to mistakenly taking it down.

The closed group’s re-emergence comes after its founder, Tony Burke, defended its photographs as “art” on the BBC radio 4’s Today programme.

Burke told Today that he started the group, which has swelled to over 22,000 members after the recent media interest, as an “observational study – just like any reportage photography”.

He appeared on the show alongside Lucy Brisbane McKay, who is organising a picnic on the Circle Line as a protest against the group, which she described as “sexist” and a place of objectify and intimidate women.

Now the page is back up, Facebook has said that users who want to request their pictures are taken down should contact them through their help page.
