Drivers have been advised to avoid the M2 after heavy rain opened up a 4.5m sinkhole in the central reservation near Sittingborne in Kent, closing the motorway in both directions.

The sinkhole between junctions five and six measures approximately 2m in diameter, and the Highways Agency have engineers are on site carrying out an investigation and this includes the cause of the hole.

A clearly signed diversion is in place via the A249, the M20, the A20, the A252, and the A251.
