Google’s doodle of a Rubik’s Cube has many reminiscing about the iconic puzzle toy, which was invented in 1974, but only got a worldwide release in 1980.

Hungarian architect Erno Rubik invented the colourful 3x3x3 cube in 1974, but it was not released globally until 1980, where it quickly gained popularity as a mass-market puzzle and later turned into a fashion accessory that defined the decade.

By 2009, more than 350 million Rubik’s Cubes had been sold worldwide, with the iconic design appearing on everything from t-shirts to chairs.

Along with the Google to celebrate the cube’s 40th birthday, Google has released a video of how to solve its digital version of the puzzle, although people will be hard pressed to be the world record solving of a Rubik’s Cube in 5.55 seconds by Mats Valk:
