International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates has described the preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics as the “worst I’ve ever scene”, with the “situation critical on the ground”.
Years of tough restrictions on doping appear to be bearing fruit, with fewer scandals every time the Olympics are held. In Athens in 2004 26 athletes were caught; in Beijing in 2008, only 14 athletes and 6 horses. However, this may mean that athletes are just outsmarting the IOC.
The International Olympic Committee and the International Association of Athletics Federations have come up with measures to ensure minimal incidences regarding gender concerns at the London Olympics. The two bodies have introduced a new gender verification policy.
