Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Kirsty Williams has called for a “proper parliament” for Wales in the wake of the Scottish independence referendum.
Speaking at the party’s national conference in Glasgow, Williams said that the Scottish vote demonstrated that the British people wanted more say over their future and it was time that the United Kingdom was reformed as a federal system of four equal nations.
The Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire said:
“Wales must have a proper parliament. One that reflects the will of the people. One that has the powers to make a difference. One that shows that devolution really can work.”
Williams went on to condemn the complacency of Westminster in letting the Scottish nationalists drive the direction of the debate and nearly breaking up the UK, and said that home rule can be achieved through a federal system and agreement between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
She continued:
“We need a federal solution in which all four nations are equal partners in charge of their own destiny, as part of one united family – and now is the time to do it.”
Meanwhile, party leader Nick Clegg is rumoured to be standing down after next year’s general election.
