Ed Miliband called David Cameron a “dodgy prime minister surrounded by dodgy donors” in a clash over political donors who held Swiss bank accounts with HSBC.

The prime minister hit back by accusing the Labour leader of being controlled by trade unions and said that Tony Blair’s Labour government had been a “friend of the tax dodger”.

The row comes after details of thousands of HSBC private Swiss bank accounts holding over $1 billion, which could have been used to avoid paying tax, were leaked to the media.

The Guardian reports that a number of Conservatives held HSBC Swiss accounts, including Zac Goldsmith, Tory MP for Richmond Park, Lord Sterling of Plaistow, and Lord Fink.

In total the Conservative Party raised over £5 million from donors reported to have held Swiss accounts with HSBC, from individuals such as Georg von Opel, Ben Goldsmith, and Lady Annabelle.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party also raised over £500,000 and took a loan for £2 million from its donors with HSBC Swiss bank accounts, including from Swraj Paul and Richard Caring.

Holding a Swiss bank account is not illegal and does not prove either tax evasion or tax avoidance, and all those named by the Guardian have said that they have always paid their tax in full.
