A homeless man has reportedly survived being mauled by a mountain lion at a Southern Californian encampment.

The unidentified man was living near State Route 74 when he was mauled by a wild animal. The man, believed to be in his 50s, did not see the animal that attacked him, but Lt. Patrick Foy of the California Department of Fish and Game
told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that the puncture wounds and bite marks implied that it was a big cat, and most likely a mountain lion, otherwise known as a cougar or puma.

Mountain lions do not often attack humans, with just 15 confirmed attacks over the last 18 years, but this attack has resulted in wardens laying traps for the animal near the site of the attack in case it returns.

The man is now recovering from surgery in hospital.
