A mother and daughter have been arrested after a top Spanish politician was shot and killed in northern Spain.

Isabel Carrasco, 59, was shot several times as she crossed a footbridge over the River Bernesga in Leon, where she is head of provincial government and the local arm of the Popular Party (PP), at around 17:20 local time (15:20 GMT).

Spanish media report that the two women arrested over the shooting were the wife and daughter of a local police chief, with the daughter having recently lost her job at the council.

Police have not yet recovered the weapon used in the attack.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has cancelled his engagements, with politicians from opposition parties also offering their condolences and cancelling campaign events out of respect.
