At least 367 people have been killed and more than 1,200 injured after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southwest China.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the earthquake was in a remote mountainous region around 11km north-west of Wenping in Yunnan province at around 16:30 local time (08:30 GMT) on 3 August.

More than 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged, in what state media described as the worst earthquake for 14 years.

Electricity and communication lines are down and at least one school has collapsed, Chinese news agency Xinhua reports.

The government has mobilised a major rescue and relief effort, and has already sent 2,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, 3,000 quilts, and 3,000 coats to the disaster zone, but much more will be needed.
