A pregnant woman has been filmed confronting anti-abortion protesters outside a small GP practice mostly offering mother-and-baby clinic services in South London.

A group called Abort67 has been demonstrating outside the clinic in Southwark and presenting women visiting their GP with leaflets and posters showing graphic images of dismembered foetuses.

UK law offers no protections for GP practices to prevent protesters gathering outside, but members of staff and individuals from the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) have politely asked the protesters to move away form the clinic doors and stop filming women entering and exiting the clinic, but to no avail.

The damage the the protest has caused to the GP practice has led to the clinic considering withdrawing their abortion services, according to LabourList.

Earlier this week, reporter Sunny Hundal filmed a pregnant woman confronting the protesters, pointing out that the protesters do not know the women’s reasons for visiting the clinic. She can be heard complaining:

“It’s wrong what you’re doing…you’re out here judging and filming.

“Many people have been abused, you don’t know what their reasons are for.

“It’s so wrong to make other women feel guilty. So wrong.”

While the arguments over abortion are not mainstream issues like in the US, protests outside clinics are on the rise, causing some women to feel intimidated. BPAS says:

“There has been an upsurge in anti-abortion activity outside clinics in the UK.

“Women attending pregnancy advice and abortion centres are now regularly exposed to groups of anti-abortion activists standing directly outside.

“The right to protest needs to be balanced with the right of pregnant women to obtain advice and treatment in confidence and free from intimidation.”
