There are major delays on the M25 motorway after a section of the road in Surrey collapsed, following overnight roadworks and heavy rain.

Huge potholes emerged on the M25 going anti-clockwise between junctions 11 and nine as parts of the road surface collapsed near Leatherhead at about 05:30 GMT.

The poor road surface caused a number of punctures and other damage to vehicles that drove along the collapsed section of road, which is the busiest in Europe, in the early hours before it was closed off by police.

The Highways Agency has called on drivers to find alternative routes due to the emergency repairs, which have closed three lanes, causing delays of more than 90 minutes, which are expected to continue for may hours.

Police and road repair specialists are currently at the scene, and they have reopened the sliproad at Junction 9.
