Thieves dug a “complex” 15m tunnel beneath an ATM to make off with an estimated £60,000 haul, according to police.

The burrowers spent months building a tunnel beneath a Tesco Express on Liverpool Road in Eccles, Salford, finally completing their mission on Friday last week.

The team managed to break through into the shop overnight on Friday and stole cash boxes containing around £60,000, before disappearing back along the tunnel according to ITV News.

Detective superintendent Mark Toker of Greater Manchester Police said:

“These people had obviously spent a long time plotting this crime and I doubt they would have been able to keep their plans secret for all that time, without telling others about their elaborate scheme.

The offenders must have spent long periods of time in the area over the last few months, which people may have noticed.

You may have seen people acting suspiciously on Friday night, possible covered in soil.

I would ask anyone with any information about the robbery to call us as soon as possible.”

Police have asked anyone with information to call them on 0161 856 5353 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
