Supermarket chains Tesco and Asda have launched a fuel price war, offering drivers savings at the pump.

Yesterday, Tesco cut the price of its petrol and diesel by one pence per litre and began offering consumers a saving of 2p per litre for every £50 they spend in store as part of the Clubcard Fuel Save scheme.

Asda has now announced that they are lowering their prices at the pump to compete, with diesel down two pence to 132.7 ppl and unleaded petrol down one pence to 126.7 ppl from today.

Sainbury’s and Morrisons are yet to respond to the fuel price cuts.

These cuts come in the lead up to next week’s Budget, where motoring campaign group FairFuelUK called on the Prime Minister to slash the rate of fuel duty on petrol by three pence per litre. This plea has been backed by the RAC, the Freight Transport Association, and 100 MPs, as well as “500,000 supporters and the 32 million road users” according to the RAC.
