A couple have been arrested as they returned to the UK on suspicion of committing terrorism in Syria.

A 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were arrested by officers from the West Midlands Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) as they disembarked a flight from Istanbul to Heathrow Airport at 22:30 GMT last night.

Police made clear that there was “no risk to the safety of the flight” or the general public in making the arrests.

They went on to say that the arrests were intelligence led and coincided with the search of two addresses in Walsall.

The pair are both currently in custody and being questioned in the West Midlands area.

It is not clear which group the couple are suspected of joining in Syria, but current estimates are that at least 500 Britons have left the UK to join the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, with a smaller number joining other groups both Islamist and more secular in fighting against embattled President Bashar al-Assad.
