The M11 has been reopened after a lorry overturned on the M11, spilling acid used for teeth whitening across both carriageways on Thursday evening.
The motorway was closed in both directions near Stansted Airport from 17:10 BST on Thursday as Essex Fire Service recovered the lorry and the acid spill was cleaned from the road.
Essex Fire Service said the chemicals, which were identified as melamine formaldehyde resin and phosphoric acid, were not hazardous.
Divisional Officer Terry Povey said:
“The chemicals are low risk to the health of people but they can have a negative environmental impact so we are containing the leak.”
The northbound side of the M11 reopened at 06:00 BST, with the southbound carriageway reopening at 10:25 BST on Friday.
