Firefighters have launched an investigation into the cause of a major fire at one of the cooling towers at the natural gas-powered Didcot B power station in Oxfordshire.

The fire broke out at around 20:00 BST on Sunday, and took 25 fire engines and 25 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

The fire was distinguished by midnight, and no injuries have been reported.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“The fire’s cause is being investigated in partnership with Thames Valley Police and other agencies. It is expected to take some time to determine the reason for the blaze.”

Npower, which runs Didcot B, said that they safely shut down one of modules of the power station, and it will “remain non-operational until investigation and repairs takes place”

Didcot B has two modules, which together provide around 1.3GW of electricity to the grid, enough to power around a million homes. The whole site has not been shut down, but the power station will be running at half capacity until the investigations and repairs have been completed.

Secretary of State Ed Davey said that electricity supplies to homes and businesses will not be affected, commenting:

I’ve been reassured by National Grid that there is no risk to electricity supplies.
