Some HSBC customers have been prevented from withdrawing large sums of cash because they could not prove why the wanted it.
Listener’s told BBC Radio 4’s Money Box programme that they had been prevented from withdrawing amounts over £5,000, and found that they could only withdraw £3,000 per day after some trial and error as staff would not tell them the limit.
HSBC admitted that it had changed its policy in November and not informed customers, but said that they had now changed their guidance to staff. They said that the change in policy was a result of trying to “protect” their customers.

Well done HSBC, this is a perfect way to get all your ‘customers’ withdraw ALL their money and bank elsewhere.
Fycking bankers are at it again
What a bloody cheek. You would think it was their money.
If I banked with HSBC, I would change my bank & electronically transfer all my money to it.
Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Idiots.
How often are you going to be withdrawing anywhere between £3,000 to £5,000 in cash ???
Hardly the point Smoother. It may surprise you to hear that some people DO need to withdraw large amounts of cash – and for very valid reasons. What gives HSBC the right to prevent people gaining access to their own money?
To run a business fo a start but its our bxxxxdy money, we should be able to do what we want with it
Ah but there’s the crux of it that isn ‘t advertised. I think the law says that when it is the bank it is no longer our money therefore they can steal some permanently when they do a cyprus bail in! Poor mafia bankers are a bit broke
They should be improving their security in other ways without messing their customers about. Glad I don’t bank with them, gang of crooks the lot of them and their mates in Downing Street.
Glad I have no money in the bank, took it all out a while ago, in a very safe place now thank you. The Banks can go and get stuffed! If I want to draw MY money out I will, why should we have to give explanations of why we want OUR money, none of their business. Time to close your bank accounts FULL-STOP, me thinks. It started in Greece and Cypress, be warned, the banks WANT YOUR MONEY, AND WILL KEEP IT. TAKE IT OUT NOW!!!
??? Why – banks seem to make up the rules as they go along – they are above the law, recent events prove this!
??? Banks seem to be making the rules up as they go along. I would be a more nervous HSBC customer this morning.
This same thing happened to me in Canada at TD bank. I wanted $10,000 and they told me it would take a few days and that I would have to hire security to accompany me. I also had to fill out a slip to tell them what the money was for. I then asked them if I could take out $5000 without security. They said yes but it would still take a few days and I still had to fill out the slip telling them what it was for. I told the lady it was non of her business and she told me its a government requirement. I then put down on the list that it was for entertainment and she gave me a funny look. I never went back to pick up the money. Lol. Truth was I wanted it for some silver bullion and didn’t want to tell them.
These greedy customers are going around like that money actually belongs to them. What arrogance!
Absolutely hypocritical. HSBC do the money laundering along with other major banks. Nobody goes to prison. The banks stop people withdrawing their own money in large amounts to prevent ” money laundering ” (although how can a few thousand pounds be compared to a few trillion I don’t know)
It is just capital controls – and these psyhos want a “cashless society” of course they do. They will totally own us then
