HMRC has only managed to catch one of the 20 most wanted “tax fugitives”, who are alleged to have cost the taxpayer millions in lost revenue, and had their names and photographs published in a list last year.
Labour has criticised the project as a “huge failure”, whilst chancellor George Osborne insisted that the list would help bring more “tax fraudsters” to justice.
John Nugent is the only tax fugitive that has been brought to justice after he was caught overstaying his tourist visa in the US. He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in May.
However, HMRC claims to have intelligence on a number of the other 19 faces on the original list, and they have also added a further 10 names to the current list of alleged offenders.
