Non-essential staff have been asked to stay at home as a precaution after “elevated levels of radioactivity” were recorded at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria.

The higher than normal levels of radiation were recorded at one of the on-site radiation monitors at the north end of the site, but the company has said that the radiation levels remain low and there is no risk to the public.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change is in constant contact with Sellafield and has confirmed:

There is no risk to the public or workforce and the site is still open

The Office for Nuclear Regulation is also monitoring the situation and is satisfied that the company are taking the appropriate action, saying:

We will continue to monitor the situation, and to maintain a regular dialogue with Sellafield,” the ONR said in a statement.

  1. Hi,
“Elevated levels of radioactivity” reported at Sellafield nuclear plant. The type of radioactivity is important be it relatively short half-life isotopes of Iodine which is concentrated by human intake in the thyroid or polonium which is difficult to measure and has a long half-life. I would advise the Irish government to start measurements in the Irish Sea.
