An armed man has been shot and injured by police in South Shields.
Northumbria Police responded a reports of a man holding a handgun in the street on Frenchmans Way at 01:02 BST.
Armed officers attended the scene after calling for the man to put his gun down, a single shot was fired at the suspect’s chest.
The 24-year-old man was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary but his condition has not been revealed.
Police have cordoned off a section on Frenchman’s Way while they continue their enquiries.
The shooting has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is a matter of course in any police shooting.
