17 homes have been evacuated after a sinkhole 6m deep and 9m wide has appeared beneath a house in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

Police have said that the evacuation is mostly a precaution, as the sinkhole has mostly affectedr the road at Oatridge Gardens.

This sinkhole is the third to appear in February, with one swallowing a car in Buckinghamshire, and another closing a section of the M2 motorway. They are believed to be a result of the heavy rains washing away earth beneath the surface during the storms which have battered the UK in 2014.
