Tehran has freed the 10 US sailors detained for entering Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf, Iranian Press TV reports.
The US said the sailors were picked up by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on Tuesday after one of two vessels broke down on a training exercise and strayed into Iranian waters.
In a statement, Iranian authorities said that the sailors were released into international waters after apologising for their “unintentional” incursion into Iranian waters.
Iranian naval commander, General Ali Fadavi, said:
“We have concluded that passage of Americans in our territorial waters was not a hostile passage or for espionage or similar acts.”
The peaceful and quick release of the sailors demonstrates the warming of relations between Iran and the US since the countries agreed on a deal for Iranian nuclear disarmament last year.
Under the agreement, the process to begin lifting sanctions imposed on Iran is scheduled to begin later this week.
