The owner of the Rana Plaza complex and more than a dozen government officials have been charged with murder, after the 2013 factory collapse that killed more than 1,100 people.

Factory owner Sohel Rana is amongst 42 people charged by police for what was the worst industrial disaster in Bangladesh’s history.

The eight story garment factory in Savar, in the outskirts of capital city Dhaka, collapsed just before 09:00 local time on 24 April, 2013.

Builders had been evacuated from the building on 23 April after large cracks appeared in the walls. However, the workers were threatened by company officials after refusing the re-enter the factory on the day of the collapse.
