Australia may finally have found their answer to Elliott Smith with Jacob Butler. The Melbourne native first struck the music scene with an appearance on Australian Idol, but don’t be put off – unlike British and American contests, who either achieve mainstream success or end up working at Spar – our cousins down under have produced the likes of Lisa Mitchell and, err… Lisa Mitchell. There’s indie graft in Syco yet.
In fact Butler’s already caused a bit of a stir in local press, ranging between compliments from Auspop.com to a nomination at the annual Musicoz Awards. He also seems to have a penchant for judging panels, as he recently applied and won a competition called Unsigned Only, performing for the benefit of Queen Cydni Lauper and Robert Smith amongst others.
