The UK’s top 100 most popular baby names this year have been revealed by parenting website BabyCentre.

The biggest changes in the list came from a surge in Arabic names, with Muhammad rising 27 places to become the number one boys’ name, while Omar, Ali, and Ibrahim all entered the top 100 for the first time.

Sophia topped the girls’ list this year, while Arabic names also climbed the chart with Nur entering the top 100 for the first time at 29 and Maryam rising 59 places to 35.

Managing Editor for BabyCentre, Sarah Redshaw, commented:

“Traditionally, Muhammad is often the name given to the first-born boy in Muslim families. With the increase of other Arabic names plus Aarav, an Indian boys’ name, the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today.”
