One of Norway’s most prominent Imams has been left seriously injured after a masked man attacked him with an axe outside his home in Oslo on Monday evening.

Nemat Ali Shah, 57, was attacked near Motzfeldts gate in Oslo’s eastern borough of Grønland at 23:16 as he was making his way home from the Central Jamaat Ahle-Sunnat mosque after leading evening prayers.

Shah is reportedly in a stable condition in hospital after sustaining wounds to the face, hands, and legs, according to The Foreigner.

The police have video footage of the incident and have described the attacker as wearing black jogging trousers with a white stripe, a green and black-coloured jacket, and grey shoes with white soles.

A number of witnesses to the incident have also come forward and described the attacker as using a small axe.
