Motorists caught speeding on the motorway could face fines up to £10,000 under new proposals being considered by the government.
The plans include a four-fold increase of the maximum penalties that magistrates can impose on offenders, with those convicted of drink driving or driving with defective tyres also facing a possible £10,000 fine.
Offender convicted of criminal damage or racially aggravated disorder would also face similar fines, with the penalties increased for each level of offence.
The proposed increases to each level are:
- Level 1: Maximum fine increases from £200 to £800 for offences such as unauthorised cycle racing on public ways
- Level 2: Maximum fine increases from £500 to £2,000 for offences including driving a motor cycle without a protective helmet
- Level 3: Maximum fine increases from £1,000 to £4,000 for offences such as the sale of alcohol to a drunk person or being drunk and disorderly in a public place
- Level 4: Maximum fine increases from £2,500 to £10,000 for offences including speeding on the motorway
