The man behind the @HiddenCash Twitter handle, who has been hiding envelopes of cash around San Francisco, has been revealed as real estate investor Jason Buzi.

Buzi, 43, began hiding the money around San Francisco and posting cryptic clues to its whereabouts on Twitter after his business began making “serious money” and he wanted to “pay it forward”.

He has made a small fortune over the last four years by ‘flipping houses’ with profits on each home up to $500,000 (£300,000), and saw teh treasure hunts as a way of giving back to the community. However, some have criticised the developer for trivialising the needs of the poor in the city, with many of them suffering from the foreclosure of the homes from which people like Buzi have profited so handsomely.

Despite these comments, the investor maintains that he just wanted to provide a little fun for people in his city with the treasure hunts, which he described as:

“An anonymous social experiment for good”

According to the Telegraph, HiddenCash has sparked a number of copycats around the world, and Buzi is planning treasure hunts for London and Birmingham in the near future.
