A £30 billion project to dig a 22-mile tunnel ring-road beneath London has been proposed with the backing of Mayor Boris Johnson.
The plan would reduce traffic on London streets, taking tens of thousands of vehicles beneath the ground, and improving air quality in the capital.
The Mayor commented to LBC:
“We need to think about these tunnels, they’ve been done in places like Stockholm, they’ve been done in Brussels, they’ve been done in Boston.
“I think this could be the way forward and it’s very important we get it on the map.”
This is the latest in a line of underground projects to have piqued the Mayor’s interest. In March, he told LBC he was overjoyed by plans for a Hammersmith Flyunder to replace the ailing flyover.
