A US commercial airliner nearly collided with an unmanned aerial vehicle or drone over Florida, say officials.

The near-miss was reported to air traffic control at Tallahassee, Florida by the pilot of a commercial American Airlines jet approaching to land to land a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, according to CBS.

Describing the incident at a San Francisco drone conference, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) official Jim Williams, said that the drone was so close that the pilot was sure that it had collided, but later investigations of the plane showed this not to be the case.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by the rapidly increasing use of unregulated drones by businesses and individuals around the world, used from everything from keeping and eye on grazing cattle to delivering parcels.
