London’s black cab drivers are planning to grind traffic in the capital to a halt to protest the private car service Uber.
The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) claim that Uber is breaching the ban on taximeters in private vehicles by offering an app that calculates fares that they say works in a similar fashion.
Transport for London (TfL) does not agree with the LTDA’s claims and has therefore not intervened, much to the chagrin of cabbies in the capital.
LTDA’s general secretary Steve McNamara told BBC News that they plan to respond to TfL’s handling of the issue by bringing London to a standstill, with thousands of cabbies causing “severe chaos, congestion and confusion across the metropolis”.
Uber has caused a flood of complaints from licensed taxi drivers in a number of markets in which it has launched, including Berlin, Paris, and a number of US cities.
