Almost 1,000 school pupils have been caught with weapons including guns and knives in the past three years, according to a Sky News investigation.
981 children have had weapons confiscated on school grounds since 2011, including at least 80 primary school children, with 329 charged with an offence over their actions, according to figures revealed from Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
Guns may be less of a worry in the UK on the other side of the Atlantic, but 36 pupils were found in possession of a variety of firearms during the same period, including 27 BB guns, seven air-powered rifles, and two hand guns.
In 2009, plans were proposed to introduced American-style metal detectors at some schools, but these never came to fruition because of privacy and other issues.
