A soldier shot dead three colleagues and injured 16 others before killing himself at the Fort Hood US Army base in Texas.

At approximately 16:00 local time on 2 April, a soldier from the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) fired shots at individuals in the 1st Medical Brigade area of the base.

Emergency services were on the scene within 15 minutes, treating some of the injured on the ground and evacuating others to nearby hospitals.

The suspect, who has not been officially named, served in Iraq and suffered from mental health problems including post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD. He died at the scene of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In a statement, officials said:

There is no indication at this time that this incident is related to terrorism. An investigation by law enforcement is ongoing and no further details are releasable at this time.

In a brief statement to reporters in Chicago, President Barack Obama described the incident as a “fluid situation” and said:

“”I want to just assure all of us we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.

“We’re heartbroken something like this might have happened again.”

This shooting comes less than five years after 2009’s mass shooting at the military post, which left 13 soldiers dead and 32 injured.
