A Morrisons employee has been arrested in connection with the theft of payroll data last week.

The theft involved the payroll details, including addresses and bank accounts, of 100,000 Morrisons staff, and the details were published online as well as sent to on disc a local newspaper.

No reason for the data theft has yet been determined, although one possibility was an attempt to share details about the pay received by management and board members despite Morrisons issuing its second profit warning in two months.

The suspect remains in West Yorkshire police custody, but no details about the individual have been released.

This news comes as Morrisons has launched a supermarket price war to gain market share, promising to cut £1 billion in prices over the next three years.
