A British tourist has been arrested in Melbourne, Australia after allegedly swallowing a stolen rare pink Argyle diamond worth more than AU$200,000 (£100,000).

Matthew Osborne, 29, was arrested at Tullamarine Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Auckland, New Zealand, before travelling back to the UK. The police X-rayed him to try and see the diamond, but Police Senior Sergeant Gilesthe told ABC News that results were “inconclusive”.

The diamond was snatched from The Diamond Gallery jewellery store in Cairns last weekend as the store owner showed it to a customer, with the perpetrator escaping on a bicycle.

Police used fingerprints to track the thief, and traced Osborne in Melbourne, and he will be flown back to Cairns for further questioning.
