The Subway sandwich chain has said that they will no longer add a chemical used to make yoga mats in its bread following an online petition.

The campaign to get Subway to remove the chemical was started by FoodBabe blogger Vani Hari, who pointed out that azodicarbonamide was also used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber.

The petition, which amassed 67,000 signatures before Subway agreed to its demands, read:

Azodicarbonamide is the same chemical used to make yoga ats and shoe rubber. It’s banned all over the globe because it’s linked to respiratory issues, allergies and asthma. This is not eating fresh!

The chemical is already banned in food products in the UK, Europe, and Australia, but is used in the US by Subway and other firms as a bleach in flour and help improve its shelf life.
