Actress Scarlett Johansson has resigned her position as an Oxfam ambassador after she received criticism for her advert for SodaStream, which operates a factory in a controversial settlement in the West Bank.

Oxfam says that the settlements are illegal under international law and deny Palestinians rights, and as a result supports a boycott of all trade with them, including with companies such as SodaStream.

The actress’ spokesperson said:

Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years

She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”

The actress was recently signed up as SodaStream’s first global ambassador, and will appear in an advert for the company during the Super Bowl on 2nd February.
