A student is facing jail after being found guilty of attacking a former friend with acid whilst disguised in a Muslim veil or niqab.

A jury at Snarebrook crown court heard that Mary Konye, 21, attacked Naomi Oni, 21, in Dagenham, east London on 30th December 2012, after following her home from work.

As a result of the attack, Oni was left with severe burns and resultant scarring to her face and chest.

Konye originally tried to claim that Oni planned the incident so that she could “sell her story to the paper” and become famous, but the jury rejected these allegations.

A number of witnesses testified that Konye planned the attack over a period of two years, after a “trivial” argument ended her friendship with Oni, allegedly over an argument about a boyfriend.

CCTV footage showed Konye, disguised in a niqab, following Oni as she left work at Victoria Secrets in teh Westfield shopping centre in Stratford at 23:30, with commentators speculating that she modelled the attack on that of TV presenter Katie Piper in 2008 that left her badly scarred and blind in one eye.
