TV licensing offences, where people are criminally prosecuted for watching television without paying for a valid TV license, now account for a tenth of all criminal prosecutions in the UK according to figures released by the Ministry of Justice.
The Magistrates court handled nearly 1.5 million cases in 2012, with more than 180,000 of those are people accused of watching live television without paying the £145.50 license fee. TV License cases had an 86% conviction rate last year, with 155,000 prosecutions, with offenders fined up to £1000 or face possible jail time if they do not comply.
The Ministry of Justice published the figures following a parliamentary question from Lord Laird.
